Algona Founders’ Day
Beginning in 1999, the Algona Founders’ Day quickly became a tradition honoring the two men who founded the community. On July 10, 1854, brothers, Asa C. Call, and Ambrose A. Call, noted the beauty of the location overlooking the river and the bluffs beyond, with a fine grove of timber to the North and South. Asa said, “Ambrose, I believe this is the place for our city.”
A joint City of Algona & Algona Chamber of Commerce celebration, Founders’ Day is a celebration for all ages. Many school and family reunions are planned around the event as it grows each year.
The Algona Founders Day Celebration is made possible each year by many sponsors and volunteers, and the Algona Chamber of Commerce and City of Algona thank each of them for their contribution.

The Autumnfest Craft Show is held the 4th weekend in October each year. Please email for additional information.
|Algona Band Day Festival|
|A 60 plus year tradition, the Algona Band Day Festival is recognized as one of Iowa’s largest and finest band festivals. Bands from Iowa and Minnesota, ranging in size from 1A to 4A, have competed for awards in the parade and field show competitions.
The festival, dating back to 1948, attracts thousands along State Street where crowds are thrilled to the sound of high school and middle school marching bands along with wide variety of floats from area businesses and organizations. Adjudicators critique each band on its performance and marching abilities. One of the most entertaining events is the drum line performances following the parade where percussionists from several high school bands are highlighted before a large crowd.
That Algona Band Day evening festivities move to the Algona High School football field where 15 high school bands compete in the field show. Again, the adjudicators critique bands for their performances and marching abilities.
Specials awards and honors are announced following the field competition, including the Sweepstakes Trophy award given to the high school band considered being the best band of the day.
The Algona Band Day Festival is sponsored by the Algona Chamber of Commerce and is held annually on the last Saturday of September or the first Saturday of October.
